Breakbeat (literally - broken rhythm) is a unifying term used to name a whole range of electronic music, which is built on the basis of drums with a broken rhythm or simply with broken drums.

This feature of the rhythm in the sound is achieved due to the fact that during the performance there is syncopy (shift of the measure from a strong beat to a weak beat) or due to a combination of two different rhythms (polyrhythmia). Breakbeat - has both a constant structure of music (using one rhythmic pattern) and non-constant (using several rhythmic patterns). Such breakdowns are called breaks. Most often, “breaks” are “torn” out of the records of old funk or disco records, which would then mix them into their compositions. Some artists use a ready-made set of breaks from samples.

It is believed that the “pioneer” in the field of such music was the DJ Kool Herc - an American of Jamaican descent. He was the first in the 70s to rip break records from funk records and use them as the main structure for turnips. Moreover, he used two records with the same music and reproduced the necessary rhythmic loss with one. At its end, he reproduced the same loss, but with a different one, thus creating an uninterrupted rhythmic base. Well, the most popular performer and breaker, who is known to this day, is the producer under the pseudonym Amen-break. He got his nickname from the name of the funky track (Amen) borrowed by him - the band The Winstons.

After that, breakbeat continued its development, but already in the 1980s in the United States. It was then that the local DJs began to get a certain prototype of the music, under which they now perceive breakbeat. Further, this genre continued to develop already in the UK in 1990. It was then that DJs began to play an accelerated (up to 170 bmp) version of the Acid House, and already with built-in breaks as the main rhythm. Further in 1992, all this was divided into two areas - electronic hardcore and drum and bass.

Thus, the gradually developed breakbeat began to serve as a designation of music with a great emphasis on broken parts, up to 150 beats per minute, along with new school breaks and varieties in the spirit of big beats (Fatboy Slim, The Crystal Method).
